Free Tune: Production Unit

Glasgow based renaissance man Dave Marcia aka Production Unit is a man with his fingers in many pies. A DJ, writer, for Clash magazine, and Producer, Dave has released on Stuff Records, Struktur, and Square Roots and has a new EP, Ghost Tracks set to drop imminently on the excellent Highpoint Lowlife imprint.

To celebrate this, Production Unit has very kindly given us a dutty remix to give away; his rebuild of Three 6 Mafia's huge joint Sipping on some Syrup. His epic mix fits the vocal over a riddim that blurs the edges between Techno, Grime, Dubstep and Bmore. This is pure dancefloor dynamite and its yours via the link below.

December Update

Loads of news this month! Two new Monkey Steak records and a brand new Hanuman DJ mix coming out of the ether into your very ears!

Records First:
Monkey Steak - Electric Birdland. Brand new on Death$ucker, two sweet jungle cuts on Side A and sweet worldbeat twostep on the flip. Available at all good record stores or People have been saying this:

Nice to get a 12" on Death$ucker at the end of all the 6 stringed mayhem. This is a 4 track newie by MONKEY STEAK, side 'B' featuring tidy, funky breaks/itchy grimey beats, effortless playful agit funk rythyms with lots of skanking ideas & dancefloor pummeling action. I feel this label bridges the gap between quality underground club music & the madder end of DnB, comin atcha like a passionate stable for the less nihilistic elements of the breakcore scene. This is beautifully produced stuff full of deep sounds, eastern samples & slightly wonky exitable beats. Flip over, you get some breathless skittering DnB action with some sweet reggae touches from the classic track 'Too Late' (this is side A! I keep on doing these records the wrong way round. Do I give a toss???) 'Toxic RIP VIP' finishes the fun with some twatted DnB hyper breaks & some mad ass warped dub/harmonica action. Cracking gear
Norman Records

"elecric birdland ep" is their latest offering on the excellect death$ucker label. the a side features two tracks of jungle sweetness; "too late" and "toxic rip vip", the later a tribute to the late toxic dancehall (probably the uk's best ever breakcore party!). the b side is a more 2 step garage / grime flavoured affair; "black milk" and "gaza stripclub" have monkey steak flexing their bass muscles, proving that its not all about junglism
Rough Trade

Fresh from having his last single remixed by Pinch, Bristol's Monkeysteak drops this four tracker, with two good rather tight Eastern influenced tracks with some tight exciting editing and punchy sounds. The other side which carries a reggae version of Mum favorite Carole King's ' Too Late' is entertaining and a good attempt but needs some work. Toxic Rip V.I.P. is a mashed up piece of err mash up.
Warpmart (needs some work?-Bah)

Stormfield - Haiku remixes.
Monkeysteak twitch out a flexin twostep rework of Combat label boss Stormfield's awesome Haiku. Available now!!!

Finally, The Lovely folk at Have foolishly give me some column inches. You can read my interview with them here:

Lighthouse Dub...dropping like a turd off a castle wall

Full artwork versions of "Lighthouse Dub" have now landed (featuring a great label design by John Elsaesser). You can pick up your copies online at Rooted Records and at your local highstreet retailer.

Monkeysteak: Lighthouse Dub

A - Original Mix
B - DJ Pinch Remix

People have had nice things to say about this:

Online dubstep fiends Rooted records squeeze out their first sprog from fellow Bristolians Monkeysteak and Pinch for their new Punch Drunk label. Monkeysteak's 'lighthouse dub' is a widescreen dubstep arrangement, with deep dub reggae vibes with obvious On-U sound influences and updated widescreen bassline pressure for the current dubstep fiending audience. Pinch's mix tightens up the drums in his usual style, and adds a little bit of trademark flex to the bassline for another bona fide Pinch killer riddim. Recommended.

Following in the footsteps of Subtext and Tectonic, Punch Drunk is a new label coming out of the UK's second city of dubstep, Bristol. Echoing the forward thinking ambitions of London's original dubstep movement, Punch Drunk's own strain of UK post-junglism draws from the influence of Bristol's history of progressive soundsystem culture, from Blue & Red and Smith & Mighty to Independent Dealers, Protocol, More Rockers and Full Cycle. Having already established themselves with angular grime laden drum'n'bass excursions on Werk discs, the Grim Dubs series and New York label Shadetek, Bristol's Monkeysteak (aka Atki2 and Hanuman) bring a deeper level vibe to kick off the label. "Lighthouse Dub" manifests their own hypnotic dubstep vision taking in new textural territories and punishing subsonic pressure. Tectonic boss, Planet Mu artist and Bristol dubstep scene godfather, DJ Pinch flexes his remix skills for the flipside bringing a solid steppers vibe to the track combined with his trademark sublime syncopation. DJ support comes from Pinch, Appleblim, Joe Nice, Kid Kameleon, Rob Smith (Smith & Mighty), Gutterbreakz and more.
(Piccadilly Records)

espenstisch, nearly secretful waits the acoustic Protagonist at the nebeligen coast below the flickering Leuchturmes. This TRACK produces a background tendency, those darkly, basslastig, sluggishly and monotonous thereafter trachtet your senses to atomise, and then with purposeful to provoke regular beacons a hallucination. Could be a case for the drug assigning German Bundestag. Very sphericalally.
